Ceolwulf I (821-823), Kings of Mercia, Ceolwulf I (821-3), Penny, Non Portrait type, Gp. III, Canterbury, Oba, CIOLVVLF REX MERCI, ORV in centre divided by tall cross, reverse OBA DOROBERNIA, cross-crosslet with pellet in each angle, 1.43gm (BLS –; cf. N 380; cf. S 923 [Unique]). Broken but skilfully repaired, edge chipped at 10 o’clock and has been lacquered (but not displeasingly so), otherwise better than fine and of the highest rarity, a significant piece and believed only the second known coin of this type (£300-500)
Found in Nottinghamshire early in 1997. Sold with copy letter from the British Museum.
Only one other coin of this type is believed known, that by the moneyer Sigestef (BMC 113 [= BLS 5]); however, other a small number of coins of Canterbury by the moneyer Oba for other types are known for the reign
