George Frederick Salmon Browne was in charge of the Jaloun district, contigous to Cawnpore; on the outbreak, being deserted by the detachment of the 53rd Bengal Native Infantry from Cawnpore who mutinied and carried off their officer a prisoner, had to abandon his post, the whole of the Police Force having mutinied also, and take the road to Agra, where he served in the garrison until November 1857. Placed his treasure, consisting of 525,000 rupees, in safety before he was driven out of his district by sending it to Scindiah’s. Sold with full service details.
