Private James Loal was killed in action (gun shot and sword cuts) at the assault and capture of the Siah Sang Heights, near Kabul, on 13 December 1879. One squadron of the 9th Lancers were engaged in this action, during which they made a ‘splendidly-delivered’ charge, in which the enemy were effectually routed. Captain S. G. Butson, Sergeant-Major Spittle, and four men were killed, and two officers and 8 men were wounded.
