Gilbert Parr was born at Teignmouth, Devon in July 1836 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Impregnable in July 1850. Removing to the Castor in August of the following year, he served off South Africa before joining the Neptune in March 1854, in which latter ship he witnessed further active service in the Baltic operations. Then following a brief appointment aboard the Flying Fish in early 1856, he removed to the Nimrod and saw action in the Second China War at Canton and the Taku Forts. Parr returned to the fray in his very next ship, the Niger, during the New Zealand operations of 1860-61, in addition to participating in the action fought against the Japanese in the Straits of Simono in 1864 - see Naval Medals 1857-80, by Douglas-Morris, for full details. He was finally pensioned ashore from Excellent in July 1872, in which month he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal.
