John Bradley was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1859.
He was born at Wymering, Hampshire in November 1817 and joined the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Dockyard in December 1826, aged 9 years. Gaining advancement to Captain of the Mizen Top during his time aboard the Melville between 1836-41, in which ship he served in the First China War, Bradley was clearly a capable seaman. Further active service followed aboard the Blenheim in the Baltic operations of 1854-55 and he was finally pensioned ashore from the Asia in July 1868.
