Edward O’Connell (alias Connor) was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1861.
He was born at Whitegate in County Cork, Ireland in May 1822 and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Powerful in May 1839. Subsequently present in that ship in the Syria operations of the following year, he went on to witness further active service in the Baltic and Crimea War aboard the Dauntless, including the Sebastopol operations. O’Connell was twice disfigured in his career, loosing his middle right finger in July 1847 and his right eye in April 1852, both probably as a result of rigging accidents. The latter disability resulted in him being discharged ashore but two years later he rejoined the Service as a Ship’s Corporal. He was finally discharged from the Majestic in May 1861.
