William Ellis was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in April 1862.

He joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S.
Belleisle in May 1839 and saw action in the same ship in the First China War. Variously employed as a Sick Berth Attendant, Seaman Schoolmaster and Purser’s Steward aboard several ships between 1841-53, he finally settled down as a Ship’s Steward on appointment to the Poictiers in November of the latter year. Ellis was finally discharged ashore from the Boscawen in February 1869.
