Three: Second Lieutenant L. W. Rendell, Bedfordshire Regiment, mortally wounded on 16 October 1914 whilst on a scouting patrol, when he was ambushed by three Uhlans, subsequently awarded a posthumous M.I.D.

Leonard Wyndham Rendell was born on 26 October 1890; resided at Shoreditch House, Taunton, Somerset; and was educated at King’s College, Taunton. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in September 1910; transferring to the 1st Battalion in November 1912.

He was shot and mortally wounded on the 16 October 1914 during the fighting on the Aisne, when entering an apparently deserted village, he was ambushed by three Uhlans concealed in a house, while scouting in advance of his regiment, and died the following day. He is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France.
