Walter Gustavus Worthington was born at Kensington, London on 20 June 1889, and educated at Branksome, in Godalming, Charterhouse, and Oriel College, Oxford. He joined the O.T.C., and was subsequently gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Londons, 6 February 1911; promoted Lieutenant, 5 December 1912; Captain, 3 September 1914; and Major, 1 July 1916. He was called up on mobilization in August 1914, and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from the following December, being wounded at the Second Battle of Ypres in May 1915, and invalided home. Major Worthington returned to France in September of the same year, and died at No. 8 General Hospital, Rouen on 27 April 1918, from the effects of gas poisoning received on the 21st. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
