George Hall was born at Pateley Bridge, York, and enlisted for the Royal Marines at Leeds on 19 May 1848, aged 20 years 6 months. He served aboard H.M.S. Fox during the operations in Burma, and aboard H.M.S. Colossus in the Baltic. He was promoted to Corporal in January 1858 and discharged on 22 September 1860.
