Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Toulouse (Thos. Belton, Ensn. 61st Foot) in its original named card box of issue, extremely fine
Thomas Belton was appointed Ensign in the 61st Foot on 17 November, 1812, and joined his regiment in France in time to participate in its last action of the war at Toulouse. The 61st fought with great distinction at a cost of 174 killed and wounded, including their commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Coghlan who was killed leading his men. In fact, the regiment left so many men on the battlefield that it was given the nickname ‘The Flowers of Toulouse.’ Belton was promoted to Lieutenant on 19 May, 1814; half pay, 25 December, 1814; half pay, 10th Foot, as Lieutenant, August 1816. Only two officers of the 61st received this single clasp.
