Robert Crawford Stevenson was born on 28 April 1862, and educated at Wimbledon School. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Lieutenant on 25 July 1882, and by the outbreak of the Great War he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He served during the war in France and Egypt and went on retired pay as Brigadier-General in 1920. He died in London on 10 January 1945, his obituary notice in The Times stating that he was ‘sometime Military Attaché at Bangkok. His award of the Order of the White Elephant is confirmed in Kelly’s Handbook.
