New Zealand 1845-1866, reverse dated ‘1863 to 1865’ (Lieut. C. R. King, 50th Qn’s. Own Regt.) with engraved silver brooch bar, good very fine , rare date to Regiment £300-350

Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Richard King entered the British Army in 1855 as an Ensign in the 50th Regiment. As such he served in the Crimea War following the fall of Sebastopol from 15th March to 12th July 1856. Promoted Lieutenant in 1859, he served with his regiment in the New Zealand Wars, being present at the action at Rangiaohia and at the repulse of the Maori attack on the camp at Nukumaru. He attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1881.

British Battles and Medals 1988 states that only three members of the 50th Regiment were awarded the New Zealand Medal for 1863-65.
