D.C.M. London Gazette 19 December 1917: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of his party after the officer had been killed, leading his men with great dash and personally killing several of the enemy. On returning to our trenches he carried back the body of his officer under heavy machine-gun fire.’

Edward Ernest Depper was born at Oldbury, Worcestershire, and enlisted into the Rifle Brigade at Birmingham on 14 January 1909, aged 18 years 8 months. During the Great War he was twice wounded, on 4 May 1915 and 21 March 1917, and taken prisoner of war. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. medal in May 1941 when he was serving with the 11th (H.D.) Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
