Charles Bonham Southey was commissioned into the 5th (Militia) Battalion, Rifle Brigade, in 1900, and served as a Lieutenant until his retirement in 1907. Recalled in 1915 on the General List, Hon. Captain 1916, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as 2nd Lieutenant in 1917. He served in the R.F.C. as an Equipment Officer 3rd Class and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1918.
