Montague Francis Markham Sloane Kittoe was born on 14 September 1873, joining the Middlesex Yeomanry on 30 November 1896 at the age of 23. Commissioned into the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, Essex Regiment, 3 April 1897; promoted Lieutenant, August 1898; and Captain, February 1902. He joined the 1/10th London Regiment with the rank of Major in 1912, later commanding the battalion when it was posted for active service in Gallipoli, arriving there on 10 August 1915. The battalion was in action on 15 August, and sometime afterwards Kittoe was invalided home. During the period from 1916 until the end of the war he held an administration post with the Ministry of Munitions. He retired from the Territorial Army on 25 September 1928.
