Frederick John Field, who was born in Finchley, London, enlisted in the 4th South African Infantry in August 1915, aged 40 years, stating on his attestation papers that he had previous military service in the Marine Artillery (12 years), City of London Yeomanry (6 months), Durban Light Infantry (4 years) and South African Mounted Rifles (6 months). Embarked for England in the following month, he was posted to Egypt in January 1916 and to France in April of the same year, shortly afterwards being detained for being found out of bounds, drunk and displaying irregular conduct. Returning to the front with the 4th S.A.I. in late May, Field was severely wounded in his right thigh by a gunshot wound in mid-July and invalided home.
