William Cameron was born at Downfield, Dundee, in June 1886 and attested for the 28th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force at Port Arthur in October 1914. Transferring to Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry two months later, he became a member of the “500 Draft”, the first draft of reinforcements. Embarked at Halifax in January 1915, he proceeded to France in late February and was among the first detachment of reinforcements to join the P.P.C.L.I. in the field, at Dickebush on 1 March. Advanced to Lance-Corporal, he was wounded in action at the battle of Frezenberg on 8 May 1915 and was subsequently invalided to the U.K. Having recovered from his wounds, Cameron remained stationed in England with the Canadian Army Service Corps and at H.Q. Military Forces of Canada. He finally returned home in April 1920 and was discharged at Ottawa in May 1921. His M.S.M. was one of just 11 such awards to the P.P.C.L.I. for the Great War (London Gazette 12 December 1919).
