James Painter was born near Exeter, Devon and enlisted in the Royal Artillery at Yeovil in March 1856, aged 23 years. Posted to the 12th Battalion, R.A. as a Wheeler, he gained steady promotion over the next few years and was appointed a Wheeler Sergeant in April 1863, in which rank he served in Canada during the Fenian troubles. Painter was discharged in March 1877, giving his intended place of residence as the Post Office at Bridgewater, Somerset.
