Joshua William Taylor was born in Whitechapel, London, and enlisted into the 56th Foot at Colchester on 5 July 1860, aged 18 years, a stationery engineer by trade. He was appointed Drummer on 1 January 1865, transferred to the 1/4th Foot on 1 December 1865, and saw service with that regiment in the Abyssinian campaign. He was promoted to Corporal in September 1868 and to Sergeant in September 1872. He was discharged at Netley on 25 January 1881, in consequence of ‘paralysis, the consequence of exposure in the performance of his duty during the hurricane of August 18th, 1880,’ in Jamaica, West Indies. Sold with copied discharge papers.
