Henry Frederick Cox was born in Islington, Middlesex on 15 September 1837. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 22 June 1854, serving on H,M.S. Crocodile. Served in the Crimea War as a Boy 1st Class on H.M.S. Queen. Discharged 28 May 1857. With some copied service papers which list him as having been awarded a second medal.
