Provenance: Found near Wolds lane, Clipston-on-the-Wolds, April 2011; bt J. Radford June 2011.
The full reading is: mm. ‘catherine wheel’ both sides, ·:· thomas · covltman, floral knot, rev. : in nottingham :, lion rampant. There are certain style similarities between this piece (the work of a local artisan and not one of the mainstream manufacturers) and the other cruder issues of Nottingham city (PMP plate 8), although there is no evident match for the letter punches. The form of mint-mark on both sides, resembling a catherine wheel, is unusual and further research would probably uncover other pieces using this device
