Sir Charles Farnaby[-Radcliffe], 3rd Bt (1740-98), Keppington, Kent, MP for East Grinstead 1765-8, Kent 1769-74

Racing was staged at Barham Downs, north of the village of the same name and mid-way between Canterbury and Folkestone, as far back as 1729. The cricket bat-shaped course is recorded as having a ‘commodious stand’ and patrons included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The last races were held in August 1879
