Following a series of race meetings at Clifton Ings dating back to at least 1709, racing was first held on the Knavesmire course at York in 1731 and continues to this day. The first grandstand, the John Carr Stand, erected by the Marquis of Rockingham in 1754-5 and paid for by public subscription of some five guineas by 250 people, was renewed in 1803
