Alfred Ernest McManus was born at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire in 1872 and attested for the Essex Regiment at Colchester on 17 January 1887. Appointed a Drummer on 11 August 1887, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 12 September 1892, and was promoted Corporal on 30 November 1896. Appointed Sergeant-Drummer on 1 December 1897, he served with the Battalion in South Africa from 7 December 1901 until 16 October 1902. Promoted Colour-Sergeant on 2 May 1905, he was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Gratuity by Army Order 254 in October 1908, and was discharged on 29 May 1911 after 24 years and 133 days’ service.
