George William Butcher was born at Ashford, Kent, in 1867 and was employed as a butcher prior to attesting for the Royal Artillery at Dover, Kent, on 8 June 1888. Posted to Burma in September of that year, by November he was in hospital in Mandalay suffering from gonorrhoea. Recovering, he saw active service with No. 7 Battery, 1st Brigade, Central Provinces Division, and after just over a year’s operational service retuned home in December 1889. Based at Dover Castle, he was discharged due to further ongoing medical complications on 24 March 1891, after 2 years and 290 days’ service.
