Fenning was taken P.O.W. in the action at Groenkop - or Christmas Kop - when General de Wet attacked a 500-strong force of the Imperial Yeomanry. In addition to British losses of 57 killed and 88 wounded, the Boers took a total of 240 prisoners, two guns, 20 wagons and 500 horses and mules. Fenning was released at Tweefontein on 25 December 1901.
