William Jones was born in Bethnal Green, London. He served as a Volunteer in the Kings Own Light Infantry Regiment of Militia prior to attesting for service with the 1st Dragoons, 10 February 1858. He was discharged, 18 December 1878, after 21 years and 10 days service with the Colours.
