James Duffey was born in Monaghan, Ireland, and attested for the 16th Foot at Belfast, in March 1858. He transferred for service with the 2nd Battalion, 14th Foot in New Zealand, before transferring to the 18th Foot in March 1870. He was promoted Corporal in January 1876, and discharged 3 June 1879, after 21 years and 21 days service.
