H. Rothwell was born in Manchester, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers, in October 1894. He served with the Regiment in the Sudan, and during the Second Boer War. During the latter he was taken POW at Spion Kop, 24 January 1900, and subsequently released. On his return to service he was attached to the 14th Mounted Infantry, and was killed in action at Holland Farm, 19 December 1902 (published transcription of casualty roll erroneously attributes the last casualty to ‘4998 H. Rothwell’ of the same regiment, it is undoubtedly the same man).
