George Arthur Ruck was born on 23 February 1861 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers (Militia) on 29 April 1899, where he was posted to the Submarine Miners, Humber Division, stationed at Paull Fort on the River Humber. The Submarine Miners were employed to lay charges across the river to be detonated under any enemy ships that managed to get up the Humber and threaten the Port of Kingston-upon-Hull. He served with the 5th Rifle Brigade in South Africa in 1902, with the rank of Lieutenant, and was discharged at his own request in September 1903. On the outbreak of the Great War he applied for a temporary commission on 30 December 1914, and received a commission in the Devonshire Regiment on 13 February 1915. Promoted Captain on 7 October of that year, he served for three years in Egypt and Palestine with the 1st Garrison Battalion, before transferring to the home establishment with the 3rd Reserve Battalion in September 1918.
