4 officers and 43 other ranks of the 5th Lancers served in the Heavy Cavalry Regiment on the Nile, of whom 2 officers and 33 other ranks fought at Abu Klea.

George Baker was born in Liverpool, and attested for the 5th Lancers at Woolwich, in June 1880. He served with the Regiment in Egypt, September 1884 - July 1885, and was discharged as medically unfit for further service 15 July 1885.
