A Jameson Raider’s British South Africa Company Medal to Trooper J. Burke, Mashonaland Mounted Police
British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse Rhodesia 1896, no clasp (Troopr. J. Burke M.R.F.), with two metal plaques of later manufacture sewn on riband, 1st engraved ‘Doornkop’, 2nd ‘Jameson Raider “E” Troop M.M.P. 1895-96’, in addition to a charging lion badge also sewn on riband, contact marks, nearly very fine £600-800
J. Burke was a native of Ireland. He served in ‘A’ Troop, Mashonaland Mounted Police, during the Jameson Raid early in 1896, and was amongst those captured by the Boers at Doornkop, Transvaal, 2 January 1896. He returned later in the year to serve with the Matabeleland Relief Force.
