James O’Malley was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, in 1878, and attested for the Highland Light Infantry at Greenock. He served with the 12th (Service) Battalion during the Great War, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 25 September 1915, on the first day of the Battle of Loos, and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France.
