A Great War C.B.E. group of four awarded to Captain J. H. Robertson, Royal Navy

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, C.B.E. (Military) Commander’s 1st type neck badge, silver-gilt and enamel; Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (Midn. J. H. Roberston. H.M.S. Tourmaline.) an impressed later issue; British War 1914-20 (Capt. J. H. Robertson. R.N.); Khedive’s Star 1882, unnamed as issued, medals mounted for wear in chronological order, with mounted miniature awards - the Egypt Medal engraved ‘John H. Robertson’, nearly extremely fine (4) £300-400

C.B.E. London Gazette 11 August 1919:

‘For valuable services as Naval Centre Officer at Invergordon and at Devonport during the War.’

John Hercules Robertson was born in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, in July 1864. He was the son of the Reverend C. H. Robertson, and joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in July 1877. He was appointed Midshipman, and served with H.M.S. Tourmaline, September 1880 - March 1884. Robertson advanced to Lieutenant in June 1886, and to Commander in June 1898. He retired as Captain in July 1914, however, he was employed as Naval Centre Officer at Invergordon from January 1915. Robertson died in December 1943.

Egypt Medal roll gives a duplicate medal as being issued in May 1923.
