John Edward Montague was born on 24 March 1873 and educated at Clifton College. Appointed Assistant Engineer, Sudan Railways, 1904; Lieutenant R.E. 1904; Temp. Captain, 15 May 1915, whilst serving with the Egyptian Works Battalion. Served in Salonika from 14 August 1915.
