James Briggs was born in Stratford, Essex, in 1859, and attested for the 3rd Dragoon Guards at Westminster on 10 August 1880. He served with the Regiment in India from 9 October 1884, and transferred whilst in India to the 11th Hussars on 27 December 1892, and served with them during operations on the Punjab Frontier 1897-98. He moved with the Regiment to Egypt on 31 October 1899, and served there for three and a half years, being awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal together with a gratuity per Army Order 235 of 1902. He was discharged on 9 August 1903, after 23 years’ service. He re-enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps for service during the Great War on 4 April 1916, and served at home for a further 2 years and 330 days, being finally discharged on 27 February 1919. After the War he became a Customs Officer at Liverpool, and died there in January 1944.
