The 50th (or the Queen’s Own) Regiment Officer’s Blue Cloth Helmet c. 1878-81, the skull complete with all gilt metal fittings, the front peak of rounded shape, the very fine frontal plate of crowned star pattern with laurel and Garter overlays, in the centre on a ground of black velvet ‘50’ in gilt metal, a silver scroll across the top of the laurels ‘Queen’s Own’, at the base of the Garter a silver Sphinx/Egypt, the plate is not original to the helmet, buff leather sweatband and supplier’s label for ‘Hebbert & Co., London’, the skull is remarkable in having two officially fitted ventilation holes, four minor moth holes poorly repaired, most gilt remains to all fittings, the frontal plate in particular is very fine, the front peak trim with some dents.
