William Musgrove was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, in 1874, and attested for the North Staffordshire Regiment at Portsmouth on 11 January 1893, having previously served in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. He served with the North Staffs in South Africa from January 1900 until October 1902, and was mentioned in Lord Robert’s Despatch for his distinguished service in South Africa (London Gazette 10 September 1901). Appointed Sergeant in April 1901, he was advanced to Colour Sergeant in May 1904, and was discharged on 15 February 1905, after 12 years and 36 days’ service.
