Herbert William Wheale was born on 31 May 1925 on the Gower Peninsula, Wales, and joined the General Service Corps on 29 June 1943, transferring to the Royal Pioneer Corps on 11 August 1943. He was discharged after 3 years and 335 days with the Colours, and then re-enlisted in the Royal Corps of Signals at Catterick, Yorkshire, on 30 May 1947. He served with the Corps in Korea from 11 June 1951 until 27 August 1952, and was advanced to Driver Class BIII on 28 January 1952. Transferring to the Reserve on 11 February 1953, he was finally discharged on 29 May 1959, after a further 12 years’ service. His testimonial on discharge states: ‘A keen and hardworking driver who has a good knowledge of vehicle maintenance. He is a capable driver of vehicles up to 3 tons. He is not afraid of hard work and will work long hours to achieve a good result. Has knowledge of repair and maintenance and changing engines, and his conduct has been very good.’ He died in Swansea on 1 December 1995.
