Thomas MacParlan (also listed as McParlan) was born in Selby, Yorkshire, in 1865, and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at York on 6 October 1885. He served with the Regiment in India from 8 October 1886 until 21 April 1893, before transferring to the Army Reserve on 27 April of that year. Recalled to the Colours on 25 October 1899, he served in South Africa during the Boer War from 13 December 1899 until 13 November 1901, first with the York and Lancaster Regiment, before reverting to the West Yorkshire Regiment on 6 March 1900 (additionally entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp). He was discharged on 30 April 1902, after 16 years and 207 days’ service.
