A Victorian gem set brooch, modelled as a realistically chased and engraved spray of ivy leaves with a bloomed finish, accented with a single pearl and a spray of small cinquefoil flowerheads, each petal set with an old brilliant-cut diamond and applied with a shield bug beetle (family Pentatomiae) pavé set with small cabochon rubies, brooch length 69mm. £400-500
The technique of chasing and engraving coloured gold in imitation of nature was developed in the 1850s.
