James Dodson enlisted into the 31st Foot at Nottingham on 29 June 1839. He arrived in India on 6 February 1840 and, after a spell at Chinsurah, joined the regiment at its Bengal station in Ghazeepore on 8 September. In early 1842 the 31st were sent to join a column under Major-General Sir George Pollock to relieve Jellalabad and rescue British hostages at Kabul. However, the column did not arrive in Jellalabad until April 1842, by which time the enemy had been dispersed. Thereafter the regiment fought a successful action at Mazenia on 26 July, and was then part of Pollock’s force which fought its way through to, and occupied Cabul on 15 September, bringing the war to an end. The 31st returned to India where James Dodson died at Umballa on 11 August 1845, cause unknown.
