Henry Thompson was born in Exeter, Devon, in 1838, and attested there for the 55th (Westmoreland) Regiment of Foot on 27 October 1857, having previously served as a Volunteer in the 1st Devon Regiment of Militia. He embarked with the Regiment for India in October 1863 in the troopship Hougoumont, and shortly after his arrival took part in the Bhootan campaign, December 1864 to February 1866. He was discharged at Portsmouth on 5 November 1878, after 21 years and 8 days’ service, of which 11 years and 4 months had been spent in India.
