Charles Wain ‘at the time of his visit to Tibet, Mr. Wain was a private in the Royal Fusiliers. On their journey into Tibet, where no British soldier had been before, the Mission were on the march from May 23rd to June 20th, 1903, covering eight to fourteen miles a day.
When they returned to England, in 1905, all the members of the Mission were entertained at Windsor by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Mr. Wain served in the Royal Fusiliers for 24 years, from 1892 until invalided out in 1916. Born at Dartford, he had lived in Dover since 1915.’ (newspaper cutting included in the lot refers)
Wain served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers in the French theatre of war from 7 September 1914. He was discharged 18 August 1916. After his death, Wain was buried in St. James’ Cemetery, Dover.
