1914-15 Star (Po.14775. Cpl. J. A. Burgess, R.M.L.I.); British War and Victory Medals (Po.14775 Sgt. J. A. Burgess. R.M.L.I.); Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., 2nd issue, fixed suspension (Po.14775 J. A. Burgess. Cr. Sgt. R.M.L.I.) the G.V.R. awards mounted as worn, the WWII awards loose; together with the recipient’s Corps of Commissionaires Badge, unnamed; a cloth badge, dated 1920; and 20 various shooting medals, one in gold (9 ct.), the rest silver and bronze, a number of which are named to the recipient, contact marks, nearly very fine or better (lot) £240-280

John Alfred Burgess was born in Leicester on 22 November 1889, and attested there for the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 10 April 1907. Promoted Corporal on 13 February 1913, he served during the Great War with the Portsmouth Division, and was promoted Sergeant on 14 December 1916. He was further promoted to Colour Sergeant on 1 October 1922, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 17 June 1923. He was discharged on 21 November 1928, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. He saw further service during the Second World War, with the Portsmouth Division from 4 November 1939, until his release to Class ‘A’ Reserve on 17 August 1945.
