Norman Ferdinand William Mitchell-Innes was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Durham Light Infantry on 5 November 1892, and transferred to the 1st (Midlothian) Battery, Artillery Volunteers, on 14 December 1898. He was promoted Lieutenant on 16 February 1901, and Captain on 1 April 1908, and served during the Great War with the Midlothian Battery, as part of the 1st Lowland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, on the Western Front from October 1915 until April 1918. Promoted Major on 25 May 1917, he resigned his commission on 7 October 1921, retaining the rank of Major.
