Frederick William Collings was born in Chichester, Sussex, and attested for the Lancashire Fusiliers at London. He served with the 11th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was wounded near Mouquet Farm during the Battle of Ancre Heights, between 10 and 13 October 1916, in what was the Battalion’s last important attack during the Battle of the Somme. The Battalion’s casualties during the attack were 2 officers and 13 other ranks killed; 3 officers and 114 other ranks wounded; and 26 other ranks missing. Collings died of his wounds a few days later on 15 October 1916, and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France, the location of his grave an indication that he probably died whilst in transit back to England.
