Lionel Goldman was born in Benoni, Transvaal, on 27 February 1914, and served in civilian life as a Solicitor in Johannesburg. Following the outbreak of the Second World War he attested for the 1st Mounted Regiment, South African Forces, at Johannesburg on 17 May 1940, and was promoted Sergeant on 1 October 1940. Seconded to the South African Intelligence Corps on 13 December 1941, he served with them in Egypt from 4 April 1942 to 1 January 1943, before being discharged medically unfit on 11 December 1943.
