A Great War M.C. group of six awarded to Lieutenant I. E. de Sherbinin, Canadian Field Artillery, later R.C.A.O.C., who served with the C.E.F. in France and with the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force in 1918-19, and was later a member of the Light Horse, Shanghai Volunteer Corps

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the position was occupied by the two trench mortars of which he was in command was heavily shelled by the enemy, he displayed great gallantry, moving through the barrage from one mortar to another in the open, controlling the fire, and encouraging the men. Although wounded in the arm and legs, he gallantly continued to fight his mortars with coolness and skill until one of them was put out of action and he himself, exhausted by his wounds, was taken under cover.’
Ingvar Edward de Sherbinin was born at Petrograd, Russia, on 12 March 1896, and attended St Andrew’s College 1911-12. He joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 26 June 1916 and served with the 70th, 9th and 71st Batteries in France, and with the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force in 1918-19. During World War II he attested for service in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps on 21 May 1942, stating previous service as above and with Light Horse Shanghai Volunteer Corps 1937. He retired in the rank of Major in December 1945.
